On The Edge
Racing
Name: Nick Robinson
Team Role: Driver and Engineer
Age: 45
Born: St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
Nick is a Mechanical/Electrical Engineer who currently works for a lithographic machine supplier based in Harrogate.
He has previously worked all over the world, including long-term stints working at Aluminium plants in Siberia.
His work has taken him to more than 40 countries, but fortunately the traveling side of his work has subsided over the past year or two.
Nick lives in Birley Edge, Sheffield with partner Shelli and step-son Patrick.
Prior to moving to Sheffield in late 2007, he lived in Elland, West Yorkshire for more than 20 years.
He grew up in St. Albans, Hertfordshire and Paignton, Devon.
Nick has been interested in motorbikes since childhood, being introduced to the delights of motorcycling in general (and sidecars in particular) by his late father who owned; amongst other bikes; a 1000cc Vincent Rapide outfit.
His first road bike was a Honda CD200 that he bought just before his 17th birthday, and he has subsequently owned many bikes, including two Moto Guzzi's, a Ducati and a selection of Japanese machines.
He currently owns two Triumphs and a Bimota, along with various long term restoration projects that have been side-lined to make time for sidecar racing.
Nick has raced previously, first in 1990-1993 when he raced a similar machine to the one now being campaigned by On The Edge Racing.
After some success with the first Imp outfit, he raced a Formula 1 sidecar with further success, until a serious injury at Cadwell Park forced him to take a break from the sport.
A year after the Cadwell crash he bought another imp outfit, but after one race in 1995, it was apparent that he lacked the fitness to ride it competitively and it was sold.
In 2006 Nick raced a Honda MT125 in the post-classic championship, he did not achieve any results of note, but the racing bug had bitten again.
In the middle of the 2008 season, a chance conversation with Ray Reeves at Donington Park led to the purchase of yet another imp outfit.
Nick and Shelli picked the bike up from Ray at the end of the season, and the following Wednesday, tested the bike at Mallory Parks weekly test session.
After a couple of laps of steady riding to familiarise themselves with the bike (Shelli maintains it was actually only a couple of corners!) they were satisfied that with a lot of work in the gym, they would be ready to race in 2009.
